About Masisukumeni Women's Crisis Centre

OUR VISION
Our vision is of a community where there is no discrimination against women and children.

MISSION
We work to eradicate violence and discrimination against women and children and prevent HIV/AIDS, by providing counselling, information, education and paralegal services.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

  • To uphold the legal and human rights of women and children;
  • To document the experiences of women who are survivors of sexual violence;
  • To expose the levels of sexual violence in the communities within which it is working;
  • To provide survivors gender related violence with counselling and support;
  • To assist survivors of rape to obtain post exposure prophylaxis against HIV;
  • To develop community based intervention programmes for survivors of sexual violence;
  • To train selected community members to counsel and assist survivors;
  • To do preventative and educational work against sexual violence in the community
  • To advocate against gender related violence;
  • To provide medical and legal information and facilitate such assistance;
  • To co-operated with relevant organisations and institutions in the region;
  • To establish links regionally, nationally and internationally with organisations doing similar work.

OUR LOCATION

Masisukumeni Women's Crisis Centre is located in the Nkomazi region of Mpumalanga province. Nkomazi, part of the former KaNgwane homeland under the apartheid regime, is a piece of land wedged between Kruger National Park to its north, Mozambique on its eastern border and Swaziland in the south. Some twenty-five villages containing a population of over 400 000 people, make up Nkomazi.

Since its inception in 1994 Masisukumeni has been funded by the following donor organisations:
